Because the need in the community is so high, the NICA Senior Society Program was developed to provide supplementary support to Northside elders and disabled residents. In Texas, roughly 845,776 senior citizens are at risk of hunger. Texas ranks fourth in the United States for the amount of elderly who go to bed hungry. Multiple factors, such as immobility, health problems, the high expense of medications, and fixed incomes, contribute to the prevalence of hunger among older Americans. With longer life expectancies and an aging baby boomer generation, the number of older citizens experiencing hunger is projected to climb dramatically over the next two decades.
